These sound like something I designed? (sic) years ago. I used to use sections of ruined comb, cut them down and shave them so that a lip existed to 'hang' over the edges of the plates. This would seal off the chamber you desired and isolate your breath.
Then I made one out of hard rubber (neolyte shoe sole). I pitched the idea to a tool and die maker from Youngstown (Charlie Rushin), who then made several out of aluminum. We sent a couple to Rich Farrell (of F. & R. Farrell), I gave one to Jerry Murad, and then Charlie made several for members of the Youngstown (Steel Valley) and Akron (Rubber City) harmonica clubs. I suppose some of them are still floating around.
I always thought it was a good idea because you didn't have to reassemble anything. And, of course, at the time I was thinking about chromatics..which are harder to hold together while you mess with them and certainly harder to assemble and reassemble.
