I will say its much easier to use on the ipad than the iphone (ive used
both) simply because of size.

I added a berhinger FCB1010 midi pedalboard for $120 that addresses many of
your concerns, and both an irig midi and a 1/8" splitter that allows you to
use headphones and line in at the same time.

RC-50 and $549 for the RC-300
