Elizabeth, my take on your question is to say that "Messing with the
rhythm" is something you do intentionally to create tension and musical
interest playing against the groove, and playing inaccurately doesn't work
musically and results in messing up the groove.
Or to paraphrase an old joke, what is the difference in playing
inaccurately and a footbath???
Playing inaccurately bucks up the feet...
