Arthur: I'M EGS (and the 'Scotty' Gary referred to (it's my nickname which
I use on Slidemeister), but have no idea who 'lachlan hunt' is?
I wrote that post.
Gary's dead on. 'not playing actual songs' refers to the practice by many
basically blues-playing diatonic players in using chromatics for 'chording'
or 'vamping'. They're not playing SONGS, meaning recognizable tunes on the
chromatic, but riffing, playing accompaniment, doing 'whatever'. That's
what I meant by not playing songs.
Like Gary, I'm not all that particularly fond of 'that sound' either, on a
chromatic. It's perfectly fine within its own context and there are quite a
few great players I even like well enough using chromatics in that way,
but diatonics have their own unique beauty and chromatics theirs and I
personally prefer (emphasis on the PREFER) chromatics being used for actual full
tunes as Gary described them (including jazz improv).
Just my own humble opinion and .02 cents, after all?
But perhaps we have different definitions of what playing a song is or is
not which caused your reaction, so you tell me which of the following people
are playing 'songs' on the chromatic if you don't mind--then perhaps we
can come to some sort of consensus - or at least meet in the middle somewhere?

In all fairness I should specify that those three players are all very good
friends of mine whom I love and consider my mentors. I can't play a
fraction as well as any of them.

Then: Alfie--Gershwin award to Burt Bacharach/Hal David: PBS: 2012.
BRILLIANT playing --wait till 2:26 or thereabouts for the harmonica, but
worth waiting for if you want to see a closeup of Stevie playing that
'pizzicato' style he's famous for 39 tears after the previous clip. (The award to
both Bacharach and Hal David's wife is given afterwards by the President,
with Bacharach speaking briefly)...this clip is from the PBS special:

Here's another whom I admire (and also aspire to play even a fraction as
well as.) I'm throwing her tracks in purely because they're gorgeous and I
love her playing:

"
"I believe Scotty refers to non blues material--classical, jazz standards,
melodic pop tunes, show tunes, religious music, patriotic favorites, etc.
I must confess that I don't care for 3rd position chromatic meditations,
but they are all the rage among blues players.
