Re: [Harp-L] re: One-Chord Boogie
Guitar fingerpicker Thom Bresh -- father was Merl Travis but was raised by his stepdad Bud Bresh -- provided what he had thought was a disappointing performance one time knowing that guitar great Chet Atkins was sitting in the front row. Later, Chet came back stage and told Bresh was a great job he did.
Bresh, thinking it was faint praise, replied, "Thanks."
Atkins didn't hesitate. "Now wait a minute. I don't hand out compliments lightly."
Then Bresh explained that he really wanted to do a great job because Chet was in the audience and was terribly disappointed how his performance came off. Nothing he tried seemed to work.
"I used to beat myself up like that years ago," Chet said. "Then I realized that what the audience hears is different than what you intended. All the audience knows is how it sounded to them -- not what you were attempting to play."
Hope this helps,
Phil
(For those who don't know, Merl Travis (Travis picking, anyone?) and Chet Atkins are two of the greatest fingerpicking pop and country guitarists who ever lived.

You might be surprised at what the audience feels. Tonight I got a huge
compliment from a regular looking man who turns out to be from Montreal.....with
a 16 piece band.
