Re: [Harp-L] SPAH and youth

Thanks, Mick - for the donation to SPAH's William Rosebush Youth Fund and for your perceptive take on young people blossoming in ways you'd never expect.

This year the Rosebush Fund made grants to six under-21 harmonica players to attend the SPAH convention. We're featuring them in an hourlong youth concert on Wednesday night and also in cameo performances every other night of he convention. And yes, we'll be raising funds around those appearances, as the Rosebush fund relies on donations to fund those youth grants (William Rosebush left a bequest to SPAH in his will, and it was used to make the initial round of grants. We continue to name the fund after him in honor of his generosity and foresight).

The Tuesday night Blues Blowoff (an independent event in downtown St. Louis) will also feature several young players who will be attending the SPAH convention.

Could one of the kids sponsored by Rosebush turn out to be the next
Stevie Wonder, Little Walter, or Toots down the road?  Due to my experience
at Lowes Records, I would never bet against a kid's potential.  And if some
of our scholarship kids wound up being good players and dues paying members
for the next 20 years, that wouldn't be a bad thing either.  So I've cut a
check to the Rosebush Youth fund and I hope some our list members consider
doing the same.  It's no secret we have a shortage of young harmonica
players in SPAH.  This doesn't solve the problem but it's a step in the
right direction.
