I am surprised in that in all the discussion about low chromatics, no-one has mentioned bass harmonicas.  If you want go low, get a bass to blow! Sounds like a good bumper sticker, but my bass is chromatic, laid out like a piano keyboard ('white' noted on the bottom, 'black' notes (+ a few white ones to fill the gaps)on the top) and therefore relatively easy to figure out, and sounds great.  It does need amplification for anything but the smallest room (as I suspect all harmonicas operating that low do), but it's bags of fun and a viable alternative to retuning a chromatic.
