Randy, I appreciate your sentiments and jazz expertise, but to me, Gregoire
is one of those few people who has an intimate relationship with music.
What he does is very correct and I would have to say, "why didn't I do
that." The real reason is I do not have that intimate relationship with
music. Appreciative of his music, yes. Jealous, yes, but only because of my
inability to think and play in Gregoire's terms. Unlike you, I struggle for
every solo I play while trying to achieve that ultimate line that says
something musically and inventive, trying so hard to stay away from clichés
while not technically flubbing.
To me, Gregoire is recognized for his concepts and courage to move "out of
the box" in much the same way Toots does. Music is evolutionary I appreciate
the enlightenment. Doesn't mean I long for the statements of the great
melodies of the past.
There are many good jazz players, but few greats.

i don't know.....it must be me....i must be getting old.....I just do not
understand this sonic "dissonance" and apparent disregard for melody. There
is technique that could be considered a "new sound" yet is it musical?
Certainly herbie and pat metheny could not be wrong in utitlizing
him......or is it a case of the emperor's new clothing? Then again many
great masters were not quite understood when they first came out...and
history has proved the nay sayers wrong.
I love coltrane, monk, and other far outside players. But this player
confounds me.
Are there any objective standards I can apply here? Do you love it? Does it
speak to you and fill your soul?
