Since your wife is doing it, consider an inexpensive finger nail manicure rotary tool. The LEAST powerful the better. Best is a 2 battery model. Use both batteries for bulk, and then..convert it to only ONE battery (with a dowel spacer). The torque will be so low that you will stall out the motor long before you damage the reed. That's what most of us chromatic tuners use. Manicure tools and dentists polishing wheels. 

I (personally) have a doctors 2 battery pen light. I replaced one of the batteries with a motor from a Yashika camera. For tuning I use a variety of round erasers. Both Pink Pearl and ink types. I punch them out with a piece of portable radio antennae tube and then pierce and glue them to a shaft. But I don't expect you to get that involved.
