i think every musician should own a decent recording device.
once you have one, there's no reason not to record, and being
able to listen later is really valuable for you and your band/jam/etc.
i second richard's gear recommendations. depending on your budget,
though, you might consider a zoom Q3HD video recorder as well. it
has same audio guts as the zoom audio recorders, but adds hd video.
having the option to record either or both is really nice, and you i find
it helps a lot, particularly in a band context, to be able to see what's
going on in addition to hearing it. who's playing what, who missed a cue,
that kind of thing. it costs areound $300. make sure you get a big
memory card with it. the default one is a joke, and you don't want
to miss something becauase you ran out of space. a good set of
rechargeable batteries is important, too, for similar reasons.
