Sforzando (forced) refers to a note played suddenly louder than the notes before. It is not a swell but an immediate attack.

I used the word sforzando with a student, but later thought I should have
said "Swell" instead. What do you call the style of starting each note
softer, then soon louder? (Not thinking of crescendo over a number of
notes.)
