most of the real negative stories seem to involve Gus who passes out drunk or is close to it.....
everyone's entitled to their opinion... I still would not be appalled if a Gus played pretty good at the back of a bar. To me it would be based on the level of competency or talent.
As was mentioned by someone else, there is no shortage of folk who sing along with bands at bars (and even concerts). Unless they are too loud, drunk or sing off key, not many seem to get too upset.

What about singing along on the chorus at a concert? Foot tapping on a
catchy tune? Snapping your fingers on a swing arrangement? All things that are
audible to one's neighbors at a venue. Is that gussing? Where do you draw the line?
