This is all true. I play a lesser clarinet and then switch. Someone once told me that you can get the same effect just from going from a bad reed to a good one. This isn't true. It's the ACTION that determined how hard you have to work. The springs..the smoothness. A bad reed will only give you bad sounds and that won't help. The instrument will still be the same.
