According to archival evidence uncovered by the Elk River Institute for Advanced Harmonica Studies, the United States was far ahead in the Orange Blossom Special Harmonica Race of the 1970s. This U.S. video from the 1970s ended that race with "one giant leap for mankind." 

The man in this video, like the first man to break the sound barrier, is a West Virginian.
