[Harp-L] Ashoken Farewell

"There is a version somewhere with words put to
>> it, but it made me clench a certain portion of my anatomy when I heard it!!
>> Some of those piping tunes with flattened 7ths are best played in second
>> position. The ones with both both Cs and C sharps have me reaching for my D
>> chrom. A valved diatonic would do the trick as well as long as your bends
>> are in good order. I'm a self-confessed non-overblower and I suspect I'm
>> not alone!" Reminds me of the words to Bob Wills' "The Maiden's Prayer"-a lot of tunes have words added after they've become popular that don't measure up to the tune itself. "Chariots of Fire" has words that go something like, "They run and they run, like chariots of fire, they run and they run, like chariots of fire.". I too prefer the chromatic for the actual Celtic stuff -I model my playing on the "box" so I like the tone better. I play a batch of tunes in A mixolydian and A minor on the D chromatic which gives you the flatted 7th unbuttoned, and of course you've got all the Dorian stuff in E minor right there. I don't flip the slide to get my rolls-I learned them on the fiddle and whistle and the GHB first (Kevin Burke says those notes are more of a way of interrupting the note than notes in themselves). I used to play a lot of bluegrass fiddle (my bow arm went bad), but having been under a rock for quite some time, I wasn't aware of all the advances that the tinkerers have been making regarding different tunings and valves and overblows so the new possibilities are quite exciting as far as adapting some of those Chubby Wise licks to the mouth harp. Lately I've been chopping up a couple of old harps and sticking them back on the comb with beeswax to come up with some different configurations of notes. For anyone that plays tinwhistle too, I am a proud member of the Academy of Flageolet Surgeons (see the Chiff and Fipple website-even if you don't play the whistle you'll get a kick out of it). Cheers, emily
