Saw him towards the end to at a Popular Place outside of Detroit. Talked to him
about the 63 Bandmaster he was using. Gary was a really nice guy and Man the
Tone. Lets no forget he had a great voice as well. Started of the second set
with a Killer Chromatic Tune that had the Place standing

I was lucky enough to see Gary perform about 5 or 6 times in the last
few years of his life. I fixed some of his chromatics and built 2
customs for him. I wish there was a way to get at least one of them
back.
He just dripped with tone on stage. The studio recordings could never
capture his live sound. I've admired many pro players over the 40
years since I've picked up the harp but Gary's use of hand techniques
was amazing. He wasn't the fastest or the flashiest player but he,
like Steve Guyger, knows how to play a little and say a lot just by
the way he colored the tone with his hands.
I too wish that there were more live recordings of him out there. I
sat as close to him as possible when he performed locally so I could
study his hand techniques.
I forgot a lot of the conversations we had. Some I don't want to
discuss here. I really admired that he was into finding homes for
rescued dogs. He also owned a few which were on at least one of his cd
liners.
I can't wait to get my hands on the new cd.
Take Care
