when you move ferrous metal through a magnetic field, there is an
electrical current developed in the metal. this is what makes generators
work. aint nuffin comes for free, and the cost of the generation of this
electrical current is a mechanical force opposing that movement. you can
feel this when you turn a dc motor's spindle, especially on a cheap
motor. this mechanical opposition is why running the alternator on your
car takes horsepower away from the engine.
