Like most subjects on the 'L', this one comes around periodically. My usual
remark is simple 'drum rudiments'. Inhale is right hand, exhale, left, or
vice versa. Just learning a paradiddle or consecutive triplets
will keep you busy for a while, and spawn some good phrasing too.
On a similar note, I just got booked for a couple of gigs by a local guitar
hero whose favourite thing is reggae, ska etc. So I've been doing some
appropriate listening.
I've brought this stuff up before too; when you are playing only a basic
scale, rhythm becomes v. important.I always dug Roy Richards:
