[Harp-L] Re: PA Systems

Further to what George has commented, I also use a Vocal/Acoustic amp for PA in many situations. Mine is an AER Combo 60/2. It's quite expensive at $1200 retail. Even 2nd hand it was $650. What I found by accident was that it could actually be used in a band situtation. I was forced one night due to a break down and it was great. To cut a long story short I recently sold off my bigger Mackie PA and bought another Combo/60 and an AER AG-8, which is the matching powered monitor cab. I put a Mackie FX8Pro mixer in front and have an entire system which weighs less that 70lbs total!

I've used it in a biker bars with a full on drummer, a guitar player with a Bassman, bass with a Mark Eden, my guitar though a '63 Vibroverb RI, and my harp through a Super Cruncher. We are not a quiet band. My little boxes are so efficent I've actually been asked to turn the PA down despite the master volumes only being at 11:00 and the mixer faders about 2/3 up. Head room for days. The sound is super clear, full and wonderful. The build quality is fantastic. AER are German made. When I showed the guitar player where the volumes were his response was, "That's insane! What the hell are those things." All three amps were bought 2nd hand at $650 each and the mixer at $150 making the system a little pricey at just over $2k but I tell you what having that much sound and clarity and being able to use the phrase, "Please hand me the PA, " to me is fantastic value for money. And I can use just the one amp for restaurant gigs and even have a spare one for other acoustic instuments or whatever.

Wow! Your playing is amazing, Brendan. Sometimes the stuff u play has me shaking my head in disbelief, uttering "expletives deleted".
If I were just starting to play harp, I would most likely go with your Powerbender tuning. I bought your Powerbender package but at my age I
don't think I have time to convert from standard tuning. I've been playing for over 40 years and I only have 30 years left on earth -- if I'm lucky!

In case anyone missed it, there were a ton of harp players at NAMM, including the one and only Stevie Wonder. On spah.org we have link to some pics and to Frederic Yonnet's account of running into Stevie at NAMM: http://spah.org/index.php/news/191-harmonicas-well-represented-at-namm

Is there a north american price on the new Hohner tool set yet?

Thanks for the link. The page they give is just a single page taken from
the 16 page booklet - it's helpful but doesn't cover the detail.

The tips look useful though.

I have the full booklet now as a PDF

Manjis aren't painful to play, at least not in my experience. The problem with Manji covers is that they're flimsy--I have bent some in my collection simply by squeezing the harp too hard. (Forget about carrying one in your pocket without a box around it.) Bent covers can reduce the playability of the instrument, so it's a non-trivial issue. That's why I replaced my Manji covers with Hammond covers, which solved the problem.

Kudos to Suzuki for recognizing the problem and fixing it at the factory.

Bruce, my advice is to go to musiciansfriend.com or americanmusical.com and look at the PA systems on offer there. The user reviews will tell you everything you need to know about how well particular systems work and how reliable they are. Packages that include a powered mixer and passive speakers run from $200 up, depending on power level, number of inputs, etc.; I doubt you'll find anything for free, but the pricier ones will certainly wash your harps for you...

As an alternative to a traditional PA system, consider a pair of powered PA speakers with a small standalone mixer. One advantage of that setup is that you can take one of the speakers to a gig all by itself if that's all you need. However, it will be pricier than a comparably powered PA system with a powered mixer and passive speakers.

The covers, of course, also influence the sound. I like the sound of the black lacquered covers on the Hammond.
That being said, I mainly use Special 20s with TurboLids, for ease of playing and organization.

I agree with everything that Richard said, but want to add this.....

While I own and often use a larger PA system, there are plenty of times
that I prefer the convenience of my small Vocal/Acoustic amp. Mine is a
model no longer made by Gallien-Krueger, the MV-200. It sports 100 watts
through two-6 inch speakers, 1-low-z mic channel, 1-hi-z instrument
channel, 1-aux channel. All three channels have individual controls, but
the reverb controls both channels 1&2. There are several companies making
very nice, small amps of this nature. I would look into "acoustic amps" as
well as PA systems.

In some respects, the acoustic amp functions like a powered speaker, but
has features (like reverb) that powered speakers do not have.

I have recently seen mention on here of people using Promaster and/or Hammond covers on Manjis, as in the new Olive. I tried a set of Promasters on one of my Manjis and really like it and so have ordered one Olive. I have a case of Manjis that I'd like to cover, but can't seem to find anywhere to get them. Anyone know where they might be obtained? Hammonds would be nice, but Promasters would be fine. Any help would be appreciated.Lare Sattler The Little Chicago Band Canton Ohio
