Hi Mike, I have suffered that heartache too.
You're right: polarity and voltage can be anything, on two look-alike
connectors!

REMEDY
I use white paint pen to write on the wall-wart the name of the FX it's for.

(I hope it only fried some diodes at the power supply entry point, not
further in the circuit.)

A word of warning though.  Recently I mixed up the power supplies for the
> HC and the Digitech.  The HC didn't mind, but the RP355 was completely
