I agree with Steve...
Unscrew the reedplates and rescrew them gently first (like rebooting your computer), before assuming any more serious problems.
Only if the problem still persists should you delve deeper into what might be at fault.

Neil, I would check that the cover and reed plate screws are not overtightened, as this may be causing the reed plate to warp slightly and thus create the problem you mention. Due to the extremely fine tolerances between reed and slot, even a small degree of overtightening can sometimes have this effect. With both reed plate and cover screws I only turn them until I feel firm resistance and never screw them in as tight as they'll go.
