[Harp-L] Re: [BluegrassHarp] History of bluegrass harmonica

Where have I been all of my life, Kyle? I don't believe I knew of Wayne Raney. Thanks for the introduction. I found one recording on YouTube of him playing blues in 1947, and no doubt it wasn't his first year of playing blues. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfLTauMBqnI
I'm not really a big blues fan but he was very versatile, demonstrating many, what we call today, genras. I'm going to watch more of his YouTube videos.

Subject: [BluegrassHarp] History of bluegrass harmonica

Calling all harmonica scholars-

As far as I know, the first recorded instance of the harmonica in bluegrass
music is Charlie McCoy with Flatt and Scruggs in 1962. Is anyone aware of
any earlier examples? I have been in touch with the senior historian at the
Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville about this. I am the harmonica
columnist for Sing Out! magazine and I'm planning an article on this topic
with a transcription of a recorded solo. Any help would be appreciated
greatly.

Thanks,
Glenn Weiser
