Thank you harp-l. You have provided SPAH and myself with an outlet to gather additional players to
play jazz. Also, thank you to all those who responded and volunteered to share their harmonica passions at the jazz jams. You helped me out immensely and allowed me to loaf and hardly play. And you all know how lazy I am. lololol

And thank you spah. You are a important part of my life.

Hi again Neil,

I copied Harp-L so that they would stay in the conversation.

In my opinion, the best way to amplify a Hohner bass harmonica is the
Sennheiser
e604<http://www.sennheiserusa.com/microphones_instrument-drums-bass-wired_evo600_004519>

You can compare this mic to the Shure 330, 315, and 330 studio ribbon
mics. Most people can not perceive a difference in sound *in the
frequencies where a bass harmonica is concerned.*

So, given that the Suzuki mic is unsuitable for the Hohner model, I assume
you know of no other suitable way to amplify the Hohner double bass?

Hello Neil,

The SUZUKI bass is specially mated to its harmonica mic by design, which
apparently has been different than stock Hohner basses.

First, please understand that we are talking about "double basses" which
designates that there are two reeds per note--the "fundamental" bass note
plus a note one octave higher. The design difference is essentially this
way...
SUZUKI has the fundamental on the bottom of the top comb, and on the top
of the bottom comb -- so that the "fundamental" sound consistently comes
from the middle of the bass...
HOHNER has the fundamental on the top of both combs -- so that the
"fundamental" sound consistently comes from the top of the comb.

Hohner showed the 265 and 268 basses at the 2012 SPAH convention.
According to Richard Weiss, the bass is to be redesigned with the
"fundamental" sound at the middle of the bass. So when this model is
available to the public, the SUZUKI bass harmonica mic should work on the
Hohner bass.

P.S.: The new Hohner basses are constructed with clear combs, with
integral plastic mouthpieces which are rounded like the CX-12.

Hi all,
Any tips on successfully amplifying the bass harmonica?
I have the Hohner 265/58 model.
I am aware of the Suzuki bass harmonica mic of course. Does this work
with the Hohner model?
The Suzuki mic is expensive, at £300 in the UK.
So any advice on the Suzuki mic, whether it is worth the money and
whether there are any cheaper alternatives would be most welcome.

Thanks

It may help, after the smoke clears and everything is accounted for, to provide quantifiable number of attendees for this year's convention.

This year's total (unofficially) is 387 registrations. I believe there's a bunch of people that doesn't count, but that's the baseline we use. Last year (and the year before) we had 398. So apparently Mick Zacklan has eagle eyes and a Rainman like ability to count, cause he noticed the 11 missing people. ;)

All kidding aside, I talked to a few people who all asked if attendance was down. My theory as to why it seemed that way is that the layout of the place hid groups of people away from each other, more so than in the last couple of years. There were also apparently more late night jams broken off from the main ones this year, at least I know Jimi Lee siphoned some people away from the Filisko jam, and there were some night-time hallway/room jams and what I can only image was Secret SPAH Stuff going on, cause people would disappear all night and show up in the morning with bleary eyes. They weren't sleepin!

Somewhat ironically, I also had a few seminar presenters say they were surprised at the number of people in their seminars. At the same time, the open mic was a bit light (though not always) and I never saw Jimi Lee do a daytime hallway jam-those usually draw good crowds. So it sounds like just as many people were there, but they were less visible.

So, in conclusion, I think the confusion stems from an optical illusion due to attendee diffusion and partial seclusion. Not that we wouldn't welcome an infusion of new people for inclusion, mind you.

Come see us in St. Louie. ;)

I have a Masco Audiosphere 18 for sale. Itâ?Ts a great amp,
but Iâ?Tve got too many amps and donâ?Tt play that much so I decided to sell this
one so it will get the use it deserves. The gentleman I bought it from makes a
hobby of restoring old amps, so it had a thorough going over before I got it.
If I understood him correctly the amp had a modification that introduced a
12ax7 preamp section to be used for guitar. I never used for that, so I donâ?Tt
know much about how it works, but the other channel works great for harp. It
can honk if you want it to. It has most of the original tubes and has had a few
modifications to make it more easily usable and harp friendly. The speaker out
was hard wired at 8 ohms to a ¼â?? jack and I did  some  suggested coupling cap changes per Jim Rossen
via Harp-l:

Change the coupling caps C5, C8, C9 to .1 mfd, Mallory 150 or Sozo.

Replace power tube cathode bypass cap C3, and V1 grid cap C6 with

stock values (originals probably leak).   Â
Jim R

Â

I did not change the C3 or C6 caps because they looked
like they had been changed by the guy who restored the amp. Â Itâ?Ts a great sounding amp and has mojo out the
wazoo. It comes with an $100.00 custom transport case that I had made by
Unitech case company. I also have a schematic for the amp. I thought Iâ?Td try on
here, where an amp like this is really appreciated, before eBay. I want $400.00
plus shipping, which I canâ?Tt figure without knowing where it will go. I would
think around $40.00. If interested, contact me off line at lmsattler@xxxxxxx and Iâ?Tll send pics

George,
I have a Hohner bass which you checked out and said it was set up like
Suzuki and the pick up would work. You said this last year. Is it
possible?

Didn't go last year because of disk surgery on my neck, but my first
impression when I arrived in Dallas was that the attendance seemed down.
And fewer vendors. Demographically, more kids. I don't know if that's
going to help; my experience with kids is that they get interested in stuff
and then move on to other stuff. There's a restlessness. But handing out
free passes to promising young players is probably worth a gamble. From my
standpoint (as an old fart), it was quite a pleasant experience to watch
these youngsters playing music around the building. I particularly liked
the one named Jake. Caught him twice, and each time he was extremely
musical. Hadn't fallen under the spell of the machine gun note-sprayers.
And an exceptional singer, too.

I would add that I know a lot of people and several were there that didn't appear on the roster. I estimate the crowd at Va. Bch. 2011 at 421 and Irving around 405.
Over the last 21 years that I have been attending, excepting the few that I have had to miss (like Sacramento), the 2003 Dallas was the largest that I had seen. (I suspect Sacramento was larger?). I agree with Mr. Pagan that a lot of the attendees were diffused. And the jazz jams had less people in the audience than Va. Bch.

p.s. What we could do to rectify all this is to jam the hotel in St. Louis 2013 so hard that people literally drip out of every pore. That's my challenge. lolol

It was also great to spend a little time just hanging with him.

Wanted to refer everyone to my note about my first SPAH experience... it's
a little long to post here, I think, but you can read it on Facebook at:

https://www.facebook.com/notes/scott-albert-johnson/spah-2012-report-from-a-first-timer/10151057230599102

I do want to write here that I was so happy to get to meet Mike Fugazzi in
person. First and foremost, he's as great a guy as I imagined. Secondly,
he's a great player (although he didn't play nearly enough at SPAH for my
taste). Finally, I am really excited about the work he is doing on Seydel
1847s. I am a Seydel endorser and, although he has been keeping my customs
in shape for a while, I expect to be working much more closely with Mike
and his partner, Matt Smart (Hetrick Combs -- also a great guy), in the
future. Their 1847s play as well as any custom I have played.

Best,
SAJ
