Distortion as a CRUTCH ?  If the player is using it in a way that is gratifying to the listener, then it is an asset.
 
 If the listener precieves the sound as undisrable then it is a non- useful element to the song.
 
 If you have a broken leg, a CRUTCH is appropriate, good and helpful accessory.
 
 If you have a song that would benefit in a positive way from adding an effect, well? 
 
The end product is what is important, not the self precieved assumption that choosing to intergate an effect into a song may make you less of a legitimate player....
