If it's classic Robert Johnson type stuff, or something like Musselwhite's "Christo Redemptor", then yes, the volume should be on a lower scale to get all the nuances and feeling that the song is meant to convey. But if it's more hard driving rockin' blues like "Whammer Jammer", or a particular song that I love by Smoky Greenwell called "Back to the Boogie" (see link below),  the louder volume better expresses the song much more forcefully.
