[Harp-L] Re: Beer

The problem is Guiness. Back in the day we used to shave our wooden Marine Bands and soak them in beer to get more tone & volume. Try soaking them in Budweiser or PBR. Then get drunk and play em. They should come around. If they don' t, you should at least have a good time.

Great stuff Konstantin, you've come a very long way in a remarkably
short time and it's been a true pleasure to have been able to follow
your progress from the beginning. Go for it!

I picked up a box set called ABC of the Blues: the Ultimate Collection from the Delta to the Cities, which contains 52-CDs and "more than 100 legendary artists" at Elderly Instruments store in Lansing Michigan. Elderly also has a web site.

Each CD is in a cardboard sleeve that lists the tracks (about 20). The box cover and each CD sleeve features a black guy wearing shades playing a Hohner Marine Band Deluxe. The price: $99.99.

That's $2.04 for each CD! (that includes Michigan's 6% sales tax). Other outlets sell it for a few bucks cheaper.

The box is 10 1/4" X 10 1/4" slightly less than 2" thick. It has an 4-page flyer advertising the Master's of the Harmonica and the Hohner youtube web site. Also included is a 2 5/8" long German-made 10-hole Hohner Puck harmonica in C. (It bends just fine!)

A 28-page booklet includes the liner notes about each performer (which have several errors) and is casual about recording dates.

While I would have included more ragtime guitarists and more harmonica players, the box set covers a wide range of blues artists.

And the price is right.

I'm working on this Delbert McClinton song. Shaky Ground, covered by the
Temptations, Etta James, Flea (!), and a whole host of other people. I can't
find any recordings of Delbert playing harp on this song, though. Actually,
I haven't found any good harp versions of the song yet. Found one vid of a
European using a high F harp that was okay, but it was kind of an acoustic
style Sonny Boy sort of approach... and I'll be playing it in E... either
with an A or D harp... A works best for the lead riff, but D is working best
for soloing, so far. There's a really good video of Delbert with a lot of
horns and a sax player, but their lines aren't turning out very easy to copy
on harp. Ideas? Hmmm. I wonder if Rod Piazza ever covered it...

Randy, I have taken both Golden Melodies and plastic comb 1847's and soaked them overnight in a bowl of warm water with a couple of Efferdent tablets, then rinsed well with warm water and dried with a blow drier on cool. No Problemo! Worked fine for me!

Hi Randy:

With a plastic bodied harp water is perfectly fine if you'd done it right
away - as is the ultrasonic cleaner Mike mentioned. Dunking is probably too
late since the stickiness of Guinness is like glue by now. The main issue
with dunking a whole harp in water is the brass of the reedplates and reeds
which can become discoloured and even begin to rust if not dried off (as
can the underside of coverplates), so one should still take each apart and
then dry them off thoroughly before reassembling.

To that end, I'd suggest watching Jason's step-by-step cleaning method as
seen here:

_http://www.youtube.com/user/jasonricci#p/u/17/E3RwSiMEQvg_
(http://www.youtube.com/user/jasonricci#p/u/17/E3RwSiMEQvg)

If Purple Kaboom isn't available in your area, I'd guess any 'foamy' spray
bathroom type cleaner would work. This isn't how I clean mine but I'm
working on primarily chromatics and I always polish all of my metal surfaces
with MAAS in between two treatments of the Isopropyl alcohol, or soap and
water for the CX-12's. There is no substitute for the dedicated toothbrush. It
works equally as well for a CX-12 shell.<G>

Much luck,

Elizabeth

DOES ANYONE HAVE A SOLUTION?

Can i dunk a plastic harp in water? In hindsight, I probably should have
done that the moment it happened since the water could not have been
anywhere worse than the thick beer.

I'm lining up behind you, Joe. Is it my imagination, or is the jazz-on-diatonic thing becoming largely a European phenomenon?

Jr. Wells recorded a great version of "Shaky Ground" on his CD Everybody's Gettin' Some on Telarc Records, released in 1995.

I soak my harps in 99% alcohol since i can remember on a regular basis. You can special order the 99% Alcohol at your drug store. Until then you can get 91% at the drug store. Alcohol evaporates quickly so it doesn't seem to rust like water, I soak plastic harps for 20 minutes and wood for about a minute....................Dane Paul

Randy, you have read by now that it is safe to dunk, soak & scrub your GM's in water but only if you have no valves in it. ïïI have tossed mine in warm water with Dawn several times, and even ultrasonic cleaned them with no ill results. ïïYou should probably dry them afterwards, unless you normally leave them saliva-wet. ïï
