Portnoy on the importance of listening and, by extension, playing "by  
ear".

Ron Smith points us to www.Brainstruments.com, which is about Lee  
Sankey's forthcoming book.  The free summary paper says that "master"  
musicians have a mental model -- which Mr. Sankey  *seems*  to claim  
is a visual model -- that represents the instrument and its layout,  
and/or musical elements such as scales, intervals, chords, etc.

What I really want to see is a video of Jerry Portnoy and Lee Sankey  
having a conversation whose aim is to find the common ground between  
these two positions.
