As the world moves on and changes, so does music evolve. Popularity is driven by the masses, which often choose the lowest common denominator as a bench mark, or the masses waiting for someone to tell them when the music is good (like a Simon on X-Factor).
Attention spans are growing shorter (a disease that began with M-TV and video games). People are not willing to take the time to sink into something with depth. They want instant gratification NOW.
The bulk of the buying public drives so many industries. What will sell to the most people?
Us baby boomers are hanging on to old ideals. Not a bad thing, but just one foot out of step with the evolution of the species.
The cycles show cute upticks in interest every so often, but this is hardly sustainable.
