I have definitely had a throat infection, decided I was "out of the woods" and played a gig too soon, and had it turn into a more serious infection, including strep throat.
It usually starts with a feeling like I have something stuck in my throat, like a piece of food or something. Then later that night, an uncomfortable feeling, or maybe pain in the larynx.
I can't imagine what it must be like for singers, who depend on their throat to perform, but I confess, there have been many occasions where I had high paying gigs or recording session, decided to forge ahead, then spent the next two weeks sick and on antibiotics.
It's a dirty instrument. Clean it and disinfect it regularly. Remind me to do the same, I don't.
It's one of the few instruments out there that requires us to suck the contents of the instrument (and the immediate environment) directly into our throats and lungs. I am sure I get sick more because of the harmonica... not like I'm going to stop playing, though! %^)
