I read that quote as hyperbole. Obviously SB is a process product kind
of guy. If you fit everything you play to a standard German major
tuning you'll get a certain result. Likewise if you make extensive use
of non standard tunings like Lee Oskar does you'll achieve a different
result. Interesting to me that those two polar opposite players have
arguably the two most often heard harmonica riffs on radio. Miss You
and Low Rider which pretty much any diatonic harmonica player of a
certain age eventually learns note for note.
When was that interview, 1992? Close to 20 years ago. My guess is you
could search the harp-l archives and find plenty of my older posts that
I would now disown. I find it ironic that SB is really focused on doing
what he does and that the reaction is criticism. Really if your
personal focus in terms of playing is in a different direction what he's
saying doesn't matter at all. Work your own program, that's what SB is
doing.
