I don't think Richard Sleigh lurks here but today on his Harp Tech blog I saw a video in which he explained that he opens the cover plates to make it easier to reach in with his tools to tune the harp without the added step of removing the covers. BTW I also have several "pre-war" Hohner that came with open covers, so, why did they change that design?
