There's minor keys like Little Wing by Hendrix, where the subdominant
chord is minor. So if you're playing in the key of E minor, the
subdominant chord is A minor. Minor key harmonicas work well for these
type of songs. Playing in 5th position (play E minor on a C harp)
works well too and it's easy--start on the 2 blow.

There is also Dorian, where if you're playing in E min the subdominant
chord would be an A chord--not A minor. That's when you use 3rd
position (although many people use 2nd to do this). If you were
playing in E minor you'd use a D harp.This involves hitting the 2 bend
and the three bend and it's a little tricky, but you can cheat and
just start on the 4 draw. 4,5,6 draw is egb --an E minor chord, then
you can play the 123 draw--an A chord. Most blues are in Dorian. A
minor is a great harp key because the G harp is so low so you can just
hit that 1 draw with some vibrato and it sounds massive. D minor is
fun too, because you can play it on the chromatic without using the
button--and again, if you have a 16 holer, you can get some crazy low
sounds.

Finally, there is harmonic minor which is very cool--think Hava Nagila.

Here's some extra information.:

A Lee Oskar natural minor harp is labeled in 2nd position.. Don't buy
an A minor harp thinking you need it to play in E minor.

You can take Lee Oskar reed plates, put an E minor inhale plate on a
regular A harp and you have an E minor Dorian harp.

A Lee Oskar harmonic minor is labeled in first position.

I put together a Dorian harp but I don't use it that much. I'm not
good at 3rd position, but I prefer it to the Dorian harp. I'm not sure
why.

A music store has a used Traynor CV-20 for $295. Anybody have any
experience with this amp for harp? Is the price ok? I'm going to go
try it in a little while.

Thanks,
Ken

Also, thanks to everyone who's responded to my earlier queries about
playing in minor. I've been so busy I've been able to read only a few
and respond to even fewer. I'll catch up soon.

While you can play Jazz on harp, there's not much harp content here. As a
Postmaster, I thought some of you might want to know of the new Jazz stamp
coming out on the 26th. It's a nice looking stamp , but it shows a singer,
sax player, trumpet player, bass and keyboards. I guess I could point out I
was watching Chris Michalek's (RIP) youtube videos about how to play Stormy
Monday today at lunch, and he mentioned that if you got what he was teaching
(I don't think I can really say I do, yet) you would be playing jazz.

I don't have experience with that amp, but do with others of its type and
class. Try your harp through it, of course, and see what you think. Might be
perfect, might not. Turn it up to gig level to give it a real test. Just a
thought, but for just a couple hundred more you could get a new Fat Dog 1A -
a really great, lightweight dedicated harp amp that has the tone that blues
guys crave. There is a clip of Joe Filisko out there on the web playing one,
gives you a good idea of the possibilities. It can play clean too - if I
don't cup the mic (a Shure 545 Ultimate Series from Blowsmeaway
Productions), I can get nice clean tones out of it. I dunno, I have the Fat
Dog 1A, and for gigs where a 20 watt guitar amp would work, the Fat Dog
works very well. Also, you can mic it for bigger venues and it sounds great.
Of course, it does not have reverb, which is easily fixed with a reverb
pedal or delay - and an EQ is highly recommended too, to squelch feedback. I
love mine - don't use it for bigger venues, but could, and have played some
sizable bars with it mic'd - the amp sounded great. Superb little hand-
crafted amp for 500 bucks - unheard of. Don't know Robbie at Fat Dog
personally or have anything to gain - but between his good service and fine
amp, I don't hesitate to recommend the Fat Dog 1A. 500 bucks? get outta
here!

Got a student with a Superchromonica 270 with a sticking slide,
besides a little water and heat, any other remedies? I know this has
been asked a million times, thanks.

What I do to periodically clean my slide (about once per week) is slowly
drop distilled water on to the back and front of the slide using an eye
dropper. To avoid water getting on the reeds and windsavers the harp
should be at an approximate 45 degree angle from horizontal with the
holes nearest the ground. I apply between 10 and 30 drops to each side
of the slide depending upon how sticky it has been.

This method has not failed to give me a nicely functioning slider yet.
But if this method does not cure the stickiness then consider that the
slide channel and slider are not adjusted properly with respect to one
another. To fix this one might need to play with the tightness of the
mouthpiece screws. If this does not work then consider that the slider
or slider channel or both might be bent a bit and should be replaced.

Cheers!

It's good practice to search the archives before posting a question. Often,
the discussion has run through the list previously, and everything you want
to know is there.

Here's the link http://harp-l.org/pipermail/harp-l/ goes back to October
1992

It seems simple enough to post the question when we get the urge, but it's
more considerate to list members to check archives first.

Chris followed my (personal) edict of NOT listening to harp players when learning jazz. Best to listen to organ or guitar for chords and horns for lead lines.

If you do go search the archives remember to not use the search engine on
the archive page, it's broken. To search the harp-l archives use the
google custom search near the top of the page at www.harp-l.org It works
really well and it searches the same archive.

Using the list to ask questions is fine. Even questions that may have
been asked previously. You never know what new discussions may be
triggered by a query. The main purpose of harp-l is to provide a
networking tool for harmonica players. Asking questions is an essential
part of the process of networking. harp-l-listowner
