[Harp-L] Custom Harp Resource
I have in the last two year become somewhat of a custom harp junkie - be careful, it is hard not to get hooked on the responsiveness of a well constructed custom harp. I began with an A Marine Band custom from Chris Michalek (RIP) and slowly filled out my set. Chris' work on his Buddha Harps was outstanding. I'm a 'blues guy' and don't overblow in performance, but the responsiveness of the custom harps is habit forming.
I needed a reed replaced on one of my Buddha harps, so I contacted Mike Fugazzi. He was responsive, and had studied with Chris, so I sent him the harp for repair. I also ordered a custom Crossover harp in 'D' from him.
The Crossover D he customized for me is crisp, smooth, well tuned and cuts nicely. I gigged with it twice last week in an amplified Chicago blues band setting and a trio accoustic gig and I appreciate the nuance and quality of Mike's work. The Crossover platform (bamboo comb, coverplates with openings on the ends) would be a good out of the box start, and Mike makes great improvements to it with skilled reedwork and tuning.
Mike's reed replacement on the Buddha A harp was seemless. Good to know I have a new resource for custom work.
