Re: [Harp-L] Re: Cables: Are there really any sonic differences?

Rick,

Yes, that seems simple enough on the face of it, in terms of a mission
statement. But the reality is that the execution of transmitting the sound
without colouration is subject to many variables and very, very difficult to
achieve. Almost every cable I have listened to has coloured the sound in some
way, sometimes desirable, sometimes not, even very good cables may colour the
sound in what is perceived to be a flattering way. Some cable may suit a
specific application better than others. If you discarded every cable that did
this, then frankly I don't know what you would use.

Cables affect tone, as much as brand of tube & any other component based on a
common design/spec. They are all subject to changes in construction &
manufacturing tolerances.

Tone is ultimately affected by the player & EVERY link in the chain between
himself & the speaker cone that turns the volts & amps into sound that you can
hear.

The job of a cable is to noiselessly carry your signal forward from your
microphone.  If it colors your sound to the point you can hear it the cable
is defective and needs to be replaced.

Use good quality cables from the name-brands like Planet Waves, Mogami, Live
Wire, Monster, and others.  Take care of them:  Learn to do the "Roadie
Wrap" with your cables.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqbYyaUY5Sk

One cable "sounds better" than another only to the extent it is quieter, and
all good cables are dead quiet to the ear.  Spending extra bucks on custom
cables -- or fretting over which is the "right" cable -- will not improve
your tone at all.
