Re: [Harp-L] Charlie Parker solo on diatonic
"quite another to play it solo or with a rhythm/chord track."
..................and quite another, again, to play with a flesh and
blood musician. Seems like hardly anybody does it anymore, at least on
Youtube.
Amazing playing, nevertheless, Jerome. By the way, just listening to
your 'Stella by Starlight'; is that a raised dfraw 5 I hear?

I think you miss the point.
It is one thing to play along in unison with a recording; quite
another to play it solo or with a rhythm/chord track.
It is also to separate two instrument "voices" when they are playing in
unison.
hope this clears everything up.
Phil

Hello David,
I think I understand your point, but I am not totally sure. So I'll try
to
answer, sorry if I missed the point.
I do this kind of exercise for different reasons, mainly : to gain in
fluidity and speed, to work out very complex licks (harmonically and
rhythmically) hoping to improve my own Jazz vocabulary, and most of all
to
work out swing.
This is why I've chosen a guy like Charlie Parker, who's really a
master in
those fields, and who can swing even at very high speed (I tend to
stop
swinging when the tune is too fast).
If you are more interested by me playing in different keys (this is
the
point I am not totally sure to have understood, sorry for my
approximate
English understanding), you can listen to my other vids.
For example :
Stella By Starlight is (mainly) in E minor (and it is slow) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm7dpusKSbw
Chopin is in E minor too (and it is relatively slow) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viMZ9CP5Tm0
Footprints is in C minor and F minor, in 2 modes from Eb major (but I
play
many different scales in this piece) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC2uh614DNI
Blues de Flamel is in D minor :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gvdyE_IPIk
I'm not fully satisfied with all of them, and I've improved since
these
vids, but it gives a good idea of my playing.
BTW, I don't play in positions but in keys. I've worked all of them,
and
continue to do so every day.
I can play easily in some of them, less easily in others.
I'll try to put more examples in the future (I play about 50 standards
with
my Trio, all of them on a C harp, so there is room to post vids in all
keys
for a while :-)).
Best regards, and thanks for your feedback !!
Jerome

Hi Jerome
I Like it but if you want a considered constructive critique that would
be
more use to you than my telling you it's nice bit of work on the
Ornithology
theme, which it is. I would be better able to give you a considered
constructive critique if you would be so good as to provide a slow work
that
is chromatic in it's construction and a medium or slow work in 10th
position
or E flat on a regular C or Richter harp. and for the draw bends
alone
Yesterday (the Beatles) in F, also on a C harp. - Yours David
