With a desperately needed computer upgrade I am now able to
offer lessons by Skype.
For those unacquainted with me... My band, Ryan Hartt & the Blue
Hearts are one of the premier Blues bands in New England. I am a three
time IBC
participant, and a Hohner Endorser. Most recently I have been featured in
the
last two Dennis Gruenling harmonica shows and currently at work on my
third CD.
I have been teaching harmonica off and on for about 15 years. My
specialties
are Blues diatonic and chromatic, particularly in the West Coast style.
Here's a close approximation of my teaching style:

Only three days left to submit nominations for SPAH Awards. Nominations
are due
on Friday, July 15.
SPAH members may nominate candidates for one of three different awards:
-- Bernie Bray Harmonica Player of the Year Award
-- Pete Pedersen Lifetime Achievement Award
-- SPAH Award of Special Merit.
Each award has its own set of eligibility criteria. If you feel that a
person or
organization is deserving, then download the 2011 SPAH Awards Packet, read
the
criteria, and write a nominating statement showing why the candidate is
deserving, with reference to the criteria for that award. Bear in mind
that the
SPAH board may be unfamiliar with your candidate, so you need to write an
informative statement.
The Awards packet is at:
http://spah.org/images/stories/convention2011/SPAH%20Award%20packet%202011-02.pdf
Please submit nominations by email to: spahawards@xxxxxxxxxx
NOTE:
- Past recipients cannot receive the same award twice. Please read lists
of past
recipients before nominating.
- You don't need to use the forms or fill in all the contact information
on the
forms, though we need to identify you as a member of SPAH. LIkewise,
contact
information for the nominee is not required at the time of nomination.

Such a shame that they have more excuses about the business than what
they have delivered.

Does anybody know if Harrison Harmonicas is facing any serious problems
these days. Are they, in fact, still in business?
As good as the harmonicas are--I have a C which I love--the company seems
to
have major credibility problems when it comes to communication.
I've waited 14 patient months for an A and a D, and when my credit card
was
charged in May,
I expected delivery within two weeks.
It's been two months and I have yet to receive them. I've mailed customer
service and am waiting on a reply,
however, it concerns me that the two phone numbers associated with the
company have been disconnected.
If anyone has any knowledge of the situation with Harrison Harmonicas, I
would appreciate the info.
Thanks,

I wasn't aware of the schedule for the Blues Blowoff. However, I wasn't
scheduling anything for anyone but me on Tuesday and Sunday. (I was only
letting others know what my plans would be in case they were interested.)
The jam that I thought we might try for those interested at SPAH was the
Friday jam. It is early enough for those who would like to do a bluegrass
jam and cannot stay up late, and it does not have to conflict directly
with
anything but dinner and/or the evening show. I doubt those who choose to
go
will be particularly numerous, so attendance at the show should not be
severely impacted. It is simply another choice (and it is still in the
figuring out stages).
See you soon.

Dear Cara-
I am definitely in favor of a Bluegrass jam at SPAH.
But you should be aware that the annual Blues Blowoff is scheduled for
Tuesday, August 9th. It will be hosted this year by Dennis Gruenling at
a

The Jewish Mother
757-428-1515

It would be best if you could schedule the bluegrass jam for a different
time
If the jam was Tuesday afternoon that would be great.
A Sunday jam would be difficult because so many people leave on Sunday.
I commend your efforts, and I look forward to seeing you at SPAH.

They do have some local harmonica enthusiasts that I will encourage to

The FTC regs make it clear it is mostly the burden of the VENDOR who uses
endorsements in his advertising (including claims made on his website) to
disclose any material connection between the endorser and the vendor, and
to
ensure the endorsements are true and current.
So, if Arnie the Amp Maker gives free or discounted gear to his endorsers,
that MUST be disclosed any time Arnie uses such an endorsement as an
advertisement. Arnie is subject to liability if he fails to do this.
One harp amp maker I spoke to told me he does not reveal discounts or
freebies he gives to endorsers because other endorsers would complain
about
not getting as good a deal. That amp maker is clearly in violation of the
FTC regs.

from Hasenfeffer harps, he has to disclose that relationship. And, if a
blogger like me gets a free harp or set of strings and then writes an
online
review, that transaction must be disclosed as well.

As it was explained to me, the seydel session steel is basically the 1847
silver + with an orange comb. I ordered a low Eb session steel and was
disappointed with it's playability until I switched out the comb. For 60
bucks it's a great deal. I sell replacement session combs here
www.harmonicacombs.com in 16 flavors ;)

I`ve got a Session Steel in Low F that I bought last week. I haven`t heard
the low reeds click against the cover plates so thats good. I could
overblow the 6 hole out of the box but I get a lot of squealing, probably
has something to do with stainless steel reeds. (Maybe?) Whatever, I am
sick
and tired of buying new harps, and since B-rads are kinda out of the
question. if it`s true what they say, then 5 times longer lasting reeds
is
worth it to me if I add a little wax to stop the squealing sound and mod
the
harp for OB. If I can overblow on it with ease I`ll start buying more of
these. although its not as responsive as my 1847 classic maybe I`ll go
that
route.
The comb certainly sticks out. Why did they choose orange? I think it
would
fit very well if I was a construction worker and would play harmonica on
my
breaks. or maybe if I played basketball while a racked a harmonica. Yep,
Harlem Globetrotters should start working on their harp technique.

OK so the reason why I asked about the session steel. I'm looking to buy
my
first set of higher end harmonicas. I'm at a quandry between the Seydel's
Session Steels and Suzuki Promasters.
So I ordered one of each in C. They both are beautiful although the
orange
comb is different.
I like both. The Suzuki is easy to play. The Seydel is very comfortable
in
the hand. Those stainless steel reeds seem like the would last longer.
What
has me a little concerned about the Seydels is that I find it more
difficult
to blow and draw on. In fact, I even felt myself struggling for air.
Am I spoiled by Lee Oscars? Am I'm just to much of a beginner? Will those
reeds break in more and ease my labored troubles?
So once again I call on the knowledge of you folks. I look forward to

Hi Jacob,
I'm glad you've found an axe you like.
How ever I feel I mast ask what are you saying about construction
workers and basketball players? ;-)
These fine upstanding citizens number amongst some of my most trying
students.
One should take care, after all, we all live in 'constructed' houses n'
stone throwing should always be discouraged.
How ever I am in agreement with you on the idea that time spent in
working on technique is time well spent.
All the best
