I forgot to answer the second part of this question. You can use either a lo-z or hi-z mic with the RP, but you pretty much have to stick with one or the other, because a lo-z mic will tolerate a lot more gain on the amp modeler side than a hi-z mic will.

When I designed my first patch set for the Digitech RP200, I used a very low-cost lo-z mic, a Labtec AM22. I eventually gave up on that mic because of its very poor durability, even though I liked the sound. When I redesigned the patches for the Fireball V, I had to start almost from scratch, and in particular I had to dial the Gain way down.

So my patch set now is designed for use with hi-z mics. The mic I use most with the set is a Fireball V with an inline transformer to convert the mic signal to hi-z. I also use a Shure 545SD or a Bottle o' Blues, the former with the same inline transformer, when I want a more traditional blues sound. Like a real amp, an amp modeler makes different sounds with different mics, and some amp models in the RP get along better with certain mics in my collection, just as real amps would.

To keep things simple onstage, I generally use the Fireball V in performances. It's not quite as tough-sounding as the Shure or the BoB, but it's tough enough, and it does everything else better than either of the other mics, with less feedback. My solo pieces in particular sound a lot better on the Fireball than on either of the other mics. I use the 545 and the BoB sometimes for recording, especially for amped-up blues.
