[Harp-L] Re: Aebersold Chord Notation Questions

Lizzie,

Sorry, hit send then instead of edit!

There is a chord symbol here that I don't know how to decipher: It's Eb<triangle>+4. I've seen the triangle before, and take it to mean major 7th. And I would think that "+4" means augmented 4th. You are correct - the fourth is sharpened, and as Grant said, the chord symbol is shorthand for playing the lydian scale over it, which is a major scale with a sharpened fourth note.

There is another measure where the "+4" is in parentheses, Eb<triangle>(+4). What's the difference...? I think this one means that you could play the chord either as a standard major 7th or with a sharpened fourth. Maybe someone can confirm or clarify?

In the last measure of the coda there is G - <triangle> Would that be a G minor triad with a major 7th on top, i.e. G Bb D F#? Again correct - it's a minor major seventh chord.

There are numerous instances of a chord letter followed by a zero with a slash through it - this is a half-diminished chord, it uses 1, b3, b5 and b7 of the root major scale - ie G Bb Db F

in "Witchcraft" we have both a zero with a slash through it AND a little circle that looks like a degree symbol - the degree-like symbol denotes a diminished chord, i.e. 1, b3, b5, bb7 or G Bb Db E (probably more correct to say G Bb Db Fb)

Regards
Tom
