Just recently I was browsing the Lee Valley catalogue and noticed a product that swells wood like water does, but does not allow shrinkage when the it dries. Here is the link: Chair Doctor Pro Glue - $10, Lee Valley Tools, www.leevalley.com.
I have never used this product but it sounds interesting. The downside might be that the wood would probably not absorb it a second time if the nails loosened again.

Last week I asked for suggestions on how to tighten loose coverplate tacks. I received several replies. One person said to put a tiny drop of water into the holes and let the wood swell. This is what I did and the fix worked great. I just wanted to thank him.
