The AFB works on the signal from

the mic or mic with volume control and needs to first in line.  Don't know
how it works, but it does.

I've been using an AFB for a couple of years now and yes it should be the mic into the AFB. The AFB takes out the frequencies that cause feedback that come from the mic.
