In my experience the most common situation for breaking reeds is when you
are playing with a band that's so loud you can't hear yourself. You may try
to blow harder or even worse you may make a mistake that asks a reed to play
a note its incapable of. The reed would rather die than play that
unreasonable note so it breaks.
