Sonny Boy Harmonica Festival to Benefit Mississippi Town
Where Blues Giant Sonny Boy Williamson II is Buried.

World-Renown Harmonica Pros Come to
Tutwiler, Mississippi Monday, May 23, 2011

Harmonica players and blues lovers everywhere are invited to the Sonny Boy Williamson Harmonica Festival in Tutwiler, Mississippi to benefit the Tutwiler Medical Clinic and Tutwiler Education Center.

Some of the well known teacher/players who have volunteered to teach and perform include international touring harmonica star, Mark Hummell, Dallas blues diva Cheryl Arena, tradition-steeped Texas guitarist and harmonica player, Hash Brown, and well known California teacher, player, author Jon Gindick. Organizers are hopeful that other well known players in the area will join them for a celebration to remember.

Starting at 12 pm, in the Tutwiler Auditorium, Jon Gindick will begin teaching beginners classes, and other coaches will join in with small classes for more advanced players. As the day progresses there will be food from local vendors, raffles of harp gear, and acoustic jamming. In the early evening, the band will start up on the stage of the Tutwiler Auditorium, and the harp players, beginners through pros, will all have a chance to jam and perform in celebratory and casual environment.

Tutwiler is the tiny, historic and impoverished rural town near where Sonny Boy
Williamson II is buried. Harmonica players feel that helping Tutwiler is a way to honor the man who gave them so much. The gravesite, a humble stone in a field outside of town, is a destination for harmonica players around the world. Tradition has it that harmonica players leave an instrument at the grave, and you often see the rusted remains of old harps.

The Tutwiler Medical Clinic and the large multi-use Educational Building are centers of care, kindness, culture, community, education and hope to the local population.
They were established and operated by a small group of highly qualifed Sisters of the Holy Names for the purpose of providing medical and wholistic health care including education, community, medicine, and medical procedures in Tallahatchie County. The Sonny Boy Harmonica Festival will honor a great harmonica- playing bluesman by raising money to help the people about whom he sang.

Classes and coaches for all levels.
