Hi Iceman,
You will understand understand theory better when you read. To what extent do you understand theory without being able to read music? Whatever you level of understanding is currently, it will improve when your ability to read is better. Why would you even try to understand theory without reading music?
It's like having a great car, fast, reliable and not knowing how to drive it. It doesn't make sense.
