Re: [Harp-L] Russ a.k.a Oxharp - My Progress after 4.5 years
Hi Russ,
It sounds great! I've been to that bar recently, a small but very cool
place.
My only comment/advice would be to be careful about playing continuously
through the song. That tends to irritate the other folks in the band and
can start to sound very repetitive (for example, after a while you have
nowhere to go but to lean on that one riff and the 4/5 shake).
There are of course some examples where you hear a pro do that (the
infamous Butterfield/Muddy Waters "40 Days") but in most cases it's not a
good idea. What other musicians have taught me and what tends to work best
is to hang back, get a feel for the tune, insert some strategic fills (not
*every* fill, give the guitar player and others a chance to fill some) and
get ready for your solo (hopefully they are considerate enough to give
one). The topic of playing through the whole song has been discussed here
before, if you search out those threads.
Keep on jamming! Bill
