In order to use a lo z mic like an SM58 with an amp you will need an  
impedance matching transformer which will have an XLR connector on  
one end to plug into the mic cord and a 1/4" plug on  the other to  
plug into the amp.  A "rat tail" design  (with a short length of  
cable between the plugs) is nice because it relieves stress on the  
amp jack.  The mic is low impedance.  The amp is high impedance.  So  
you need a transformer to match impedance between the mic an the amp-- 
it's not just a matter of using adaptor plugs.
But if you are going for an "acoustic" sound, you can just plug the  
mic into the PA and not worry about an amp.
