[Harp-L] Re: still need to decide on a mic

John,

I have a Shaker dynamic mic, and I love it, but not for everything. It's the mic I always turn to for practicing, or for a gig where I don't need to be loud. The output is lower compared to several other harp mics I have, but that's what makes it a great practice mic, and very feedback resistant. It has a wonderful tone when plugged into the small tube amp I use for practicing, and the volume control is very useful for that because I can crank the amp up without blowing the family out of the house. That said, I haven't tried it with a solid state amp.

Here's a video of a children's concert where I used the Shaker with a Crate VC-508 (a 5 watt tube amp). Another harp player dropped in for part of the show and said that I wasn't loud enough, which you can tell from the video, but that's because we didn't get a sound check. I had more power available from the amp, but I was using the Shaker's volume control to get a comfortable level on stage (my amp was not in the PA). To me it was plenty loud.

There is a short harp solo at about 2:17 into the video. YouTube is no way to judge sound quality, and I'm not an expert player, but this is at least a real-word example of what the Shaker can do with a small amp.

Good luck, and let us know what you end up with and what you think of the results.

Hello:

I am a beginning harpster, and I'm looking for an inexpensive small amp and a mic to go with it. So far, I am considering the Pignose 7-100 and the Roland Micro Cube. Any recommendations about these two, or should I look at something else?

As to mics, I'm looking at the Shaker, Asta tic J-30 Roadhouse, and the Bottle O' Blues. Thoughts?

I apologize if this subject has been covered before, but I cannot figure to how to search this list.

Thanks very much for helping a newbie.

John
