Thanks Aongus for relating the success of that method, and thanks to Vern, Joe and Zombor for their responses, too.
Based on what I've heard so far, and taking into account my skills and experience (or lack thereof):
My current plan A is to use some epoxy that has a thick consistency and fill the end of the slot directly, (after applying a bit of masking, and maybe making some cuts to key in the lump) and then grind and file the result to size.
My current plan B is to use some of the scrap brass and my dremel to carve out a brass 'slug' that I can jam into the end of the slot tightly enough to stay in place, and then solder it, and finally file the result to size.
And I will ask my EDM guy to custom cut a file for me - good idea Vern. It will take a few days for me to get the file cut so in the meantime I'm open to any other ideas or critique of these plans.

Vern's suggestion of swaging out a suitably sized slug to fill the hole is
the method I have seen used successfully by Rick Epping in building his
"Bunker Buster" harps.
This technique is not for the faint hearted or the ham fisted I am afraid.
