Re: [Harp-L] Bands are too expensive?
Brother James and Harp-L-er family,
There is/was a guy from South Carolina or Georgia who made his own
James Bond-type movies some years ago. True there may have been limited
success but the idea was that Bond may have been too sophisticated or maybe
that the real movies cost too much.
If you play it - they will come.
It is too bad that everything has or has-to have a higher price tag.
The other side of the proverbial coin is that you get what you pay for. A DJ
or Spin Doctor may be able to play the tunes but the originality will never
be duplicated.
Recently I read that the Internet would kill the printed
word...Bologna! Circulation of the printed word has never been higher. And
have you ever seen an empty shelf in a book store or an empty magazine rack?
Why is a good harp player is hard to find? Because they are worth it!
Several previous Harp-L and Harp Talk contributors have said that all
you need to do is listen to almost any pickup truck ad or the most recent
Cotton Patch ads and you'll hear from plenty of working harp players. Yes, I
know there's a difference between playing with a band and doing some Blusey
licks for thirty seconds. Like wise you may be looking too hard for a band
that is "established" as opposed to a band that is "hungry"; consequently
your staring down a mighty big bore barrel.

Suave Blues Man

Subject: [Harp-L] Bands are too expensive?
After having a conversation about hiring a band for a large reunion of,
potentially, 500 people, and being told that a band would be too expensive
and
the group would opt for a DJ instead, I was reminded of a talk I had with
a very
well known harp player who said that recording equipment and synthesizers
had
put a lot of musicians out of work. I'm thinking work is going to be a lot
harder to find and the pay is going to drop even more as those who haven't
gone
professional because of health insurance concerns do start looking for
gigs as
insurnace becomes available. Is there no relief?
