Re: [Harp-L] Invited!

Thank you, Michelle!

I should clarify, though: It wasn't using Band-in-a-Box for a week that got me to the point of being invited to sit in for a couple of songs at a "real" gig.

I have been studying harp for 2 1/2 years. I have attended several of Jon Gindick's Harmonica Jam Camps. I took weekly lessons (by phone) from Jimi Lee for a year, and am currently studying with Michael Rubin. I have been playing out at my local open blues jam for just shy of a year, for better and for worse: Suit up and show up, every week, whether I think I'm in the mood or not.

Monday's triumph was being asked to play by someone who had his own reputation to uphold, who had heard me play a couple of times (at the open jams), therefore knew what he was getting, and invited me to play on stage with him based on that knowledge.

The BIAB work is to give myself as efficient as possible a way to learn and practice singing songs at home, which I currently think is the biggest hole in my music-making. I'm pleased to have had some breakthroughs with that, but my BIAB progress is quite separate from Monday's triumph.

BAIB is a powerful tool. But if you have to choose, spend your money and time with fellow musicians whom you like, admire, and respect, and from whom you can learn. Take lessons. Attend events (like SPAH, and GSHF, and Jam Camp). Listen a lot. Play a lot.

That's just great, Elizabeth!

And it's been what, just a week or so that you've been using Band In A Box? That's an amazing success story. Guess I better take a serious look at it! ;-)

Seriously, tain't nuthin' like getting invited to play. I'm so happy for and proud of ya!

Please continue to keep us informed with your progress with BIAB and your victories playing out.
