The delays in the Digitech Hardwire use the same electronics as the Digitech RP series pedals. I like the delays in the Digitech RPs plenty. Given that an RP is about the same price as most dedicated delays, and has a lot more stuff in it than a delay unit (including a lot of good reverbs too, which you can use with the delay or alone), I consider it a high value-for-money alternative to a dedicated delay.

That said, there are plenty of good dedicated delays out there, a number of which have been mentioned in this thread. My basic advice to anyone who wants a delay is to go to the nearest Guitar Center with $125 (or whatever you can afford) in one hand and your amp and mic in the other, and try every delay in that price range until you find the one you like most.

Every effect is part of a system, and the system includes the amp and the mic (not to mention the player). So you want to hear the gear in the context of your entire system if at all possible before you buy.
